| Nina K. Peace, 53, of Ashland, passed away on February 29, 2004.
We will miss her passion for the truth, her diligence to do the
right thing for her community and fellow man, her dedication to the
unfortunate, her generous nature, and her unwavering loyalty to her
family and friends. Nina truly was...one of a kind. Irreplaceable,
respected and loved.

A TOAST TO NINA
To a fine Rotarian and simply our friend who will always be with
us. In our daily struggles, may we search for truth and act boldly
on it, as Nina did. When our neighbors are in need, may we act in a
charitable manner, as Nina did. In our dealings with each other, may
we act with caring and love as Nina exemplified.
This toast to Nina Peace was made by
W. Canova Peterson to the Hanover County Rotary Club on March 3,
2004. The club responded in hearty support for our beloved friend
and fellow Rotarian. |
She was survived by her mother, Kathryn K. Himmelsbach; husband,
Edward Clarence Stevens; son, Christopher Kilian Peace; three
stepchildren, Ned Stevens, Kathy Stevens and Ellen Sullivan. After
graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School in D.C. and Goucher College,
Ms. Peace received her law degree from the T.C. Williams School of Law,
where she later served as an Assistant to the Dean. She was a member of
the Virginia Bar Association, and practiced law in Ashland for over 30
years. From 1990 until 1996, Ms. Peace served as Judge of the Juvenile
and Domestic Relations Court in Hanover and Caroline Counties. In
addition to the Virginia Bar, she was a member of the Washington, D.C.
Bar Association and was a past president of the Hanover Bar Association.
She was a former Commissioner of Chancery. In 1986, she was named
Outstanding Attorney of Virginia by the Virginia Women's Attorneys
Association and the Metropolitan Richmond Women's Bar Association. Ms.
Peace was also an Adjunct Professor of Business Law at Randolph Macon
College. An active Democrat, she was the first woman member of the
Hanover County Board of Supervisors, representing Ashland from 1975
until 1990, having served as its Chairman and Vice Chairman. Noted for
her leadership, her generous service to the community, an her advocacy
for those in need, Ms. Peace helped found CASA (Court Appointed Special
Advocates), the Hanover unit of the American Heart Association and
Hanover Citizens for Sensible Growth. She was a member of Leadership
Metro Richmond, Class of 1985. Ms. Peach also served as a Boy Scout Den
Leader, as a board member of the Hanover Arts and Activities Center, and
as a member of the Ashland Junior Woman's Club of Ashland and was a
Communicant of St. James the Less Episcopal Church.
